Professor Soledad Torres Guijarro – Underwater noise pollution/Gender mainstreaming in research

Abstract

Part One: Underwater noise pollution

The marine environment, perhaps contrary to popular belief, is far from silent. The noise caused by human activities is steadily increasing, and is driving many marine species out of their habitats. In this first part of the lecture, I will summarise the main sources of anthropogenic noise, its best-known effects on marine wildlife, and the measures that can be taken to mitigate the problem. I will also share the lines of research I am working on related to this topic.

Part two: Gender mainstreaming in research

In this part of the lecture I will provide arguments that demonstrate that gender mainstreaming is essential for good quality research. It is also essential for obtaining funding, as I will demonstrate by looking at the trend of funding agencies. Finally, I will present useful tools to learn how to incorporate this perspective effectively in our research work.

Biography

Soledad Torres Guijarro is a telecommunication engineer by the Polytechnic University of Madrid. She obtained her PhD at the same institution for her work in voice recognition in the context of digital processing of signals. After obtaining her PhD, she focused on teaching and was a lecturer in several Spanish universities, such as the University of Valladolid”, the Charles III University of Madrid, and the European University of Madrid. After that, she continued her postdoctoral research at the University of Vigo (Spain), where she investigated the processing of audio and acoustic signals, with special focus on submarine noise.

Later, Soledad became a Professor at the same institution in the Department of Theory of the Signals and Communications, part of the Engineering School of Telecommunications. She has worked in more than 40 research projects, including private and public funded projects. She has also been the Principal Investigator in eight of them, published more than 40 scientific papers, given numerous talks in international and Spanish conferences, and registered a patent, among many other activities.

Soledad has been actively involved in scientific outreach, gender equality in STEM, and promoting  women in science. From 2016, Soledad is the treasurer and part of the Board of Directors of the Galician constituency of the Spanish Association of Female Researchers and Technologists (AMIT). In 2022, she joined the national BoD of AMIT. Since 2017, Soledad is also the Delegate for Equality of the School of Telecommunications Engineering, and is also part of the Board of Directors of the Association Nós Mesmas (translated as “Ourselves” from galician), which defends the rights of the LGBTQ+ communities in the city of Vigo (Spain).
